Ivin Jay

Ivin Jay was born in Northern Utah to a musically creative family. At the age of 12 he began playing drums after a band class in Junior High School.  His mother, who is also a very talented comedian, also played the drums. His father purchased a set of drums from a local music store and Ivin hasn’t looked back since. He spent his formative years practicing to Van Halen tapes pretending that he was Alex on stage at the Salt Palace. (An old arena in Salt Lake City that has since been demolished.) At age sixteen he began the rite of the Garage Band and found the thrill of playing in front of people. The bands that he played in were the garden-variety bands; lots of heart but little talent. Perseverance prevailed where his peers gave up the dream, he continued playing, drumming and dreaming of the next show and what he could do to make himself and the band better.

Drum lessons and marching bands helped hone Ivin’s craft. He studied with local drum gurus Larry Mahlis and Dan Robins.

Ivin continues to rock. Ivin enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife, his three amazing children. Ivin joined Shadow shortly after returning from Washington DC/Northern Virginia where he worked as a project manager for an internet service provider.

“I love to play with Shadow. The music and the friendship we’ve created is what, I feel, musicians always strive for. Music should be family and Shadow is that.  Scott with his voice and words, Gordon with his amazing guitar work and Baldy adds that “thing” you can’t put your finger on.”

“I am very proud of the songs on the new record and I feel they represent what we are about.”

Ivin uses DW Drums, Zildjian cymbals, Vic Firth Drumsticks and Ultimate Ears In-ear monitors.
